SEYDOU KEITA: MID-CENTURY MODERN

May 7-31, 2000

“The thousands of portraits that Seydou Keïta took form an outstanding record of Malian (West African) society between the end of the Forties and the early Sixties. His photographs have become – in addition to their sociological value – works of art, free from tricks, eccentricity, or any attempt at illusion. Through his quest for accuracy, Keïta seems intuitively to have reinvented the art of the portrait.”

– André Magnin

This exhibition showcased the work of Seydou Keïta as part of Toronto’s 2000 Photography Festival CONTACT. Curated by Robert Osbourne & Kenneth Montague, Seydou Keïta : Mid-Century Modern was the first exhibition of the artist’s work in Canada.
